CraftWorks in Action: A Polymer Clay and Mixed Media Community

This is the first session of a planned monthly gathering for community artists working in polymer clay/mixed media to be able to work together in our studio, network, and learn from each other. This month's gathering will include a demonstration, by Mona Kissel, of how to make "tight' color blends using polymer clay.

Please bring a lunch, a small project to work on, and any tools/supplies you need.

There is no cost for this session.

Master Artist Series: Copper Sculpture with Brian Kirk

Students will do a field walk to research and sketch simple insects and invertebrate designs to be created in copper. Final sketches are then transferred to construction paper to be made into models. Model shapes are then traced onto the copper sheet and cut out with shears or snips.

Shaping, hammering, and soldering create the sculptures. The artwork is cleaned and ready for presentation or further coloring.

Material fee: $25 to be collected at class.

Avant Guardian Program: Intensive Studio Art Training & Mentoring for Teens

The Avant Guardian Program is for teens (Ages 14+) with an interest in pursuing future studies or careers in art. During this one-week training, participants will create a working sketchbook, an artist statement, at least 2 completed portfolio pieces, and find new excitement for their art! The training will feature guest speakers–professors from local colleges and universities and working artists, providing students insights on preparing for a career in art. Participants will also work side by side with CraftWorks Teaching Artists and train to become mentors and junior counselors at Camp Cool Spring. The week will close with an exhibit of their work.

Polymer clay plays well with all sorts of other materials. You can combine it with paper, wood, feathers, bits of nature, shell and more to create art, jewelry and tiles. In this two evening workshop, you’ll learn to work with this fun and versatile clay (no kiln needed). We’ll cover many techniques and explore a variety of materials while you are making your own unique masterpieces. You’ll head home in love with at least two beautiful pieces of art and many ideas for how to design with polymer clay in the future. All skill levels welcome and encouraged.

This class will meet on two consecutive nights: Tuesday, June 12 & Wednesday, June 13. Materials fee: $14.

If you have worked with polymer clay or taken a polymer clay class at CraftWorks, this is your chance to continue exploring this versatile material. You’ll have plenty of workspace and equipment. Any materials you need will be available for purchase. Bring anything you want to work on and be sure to bring an ornate button, piece of jewelry or other texture that we can swap and make molds from (you’ll get your unharmed original back). We can see what others are doing with their work and learn from each other.

A creative naturalist's dream. A time to get outside and get muddy! Each day we'll explore the land and water of Cool Spring to collect natural elements to use in pottery activities, and as inspiration. Projects include looking for frogs in the Marl Marsh, making clay frogs, collecting leaves and flowers for imprints in clay, and creating your very own toad house for your home garden. Students will complete at least 5 clay projects which will be kiln-fired and glazed in our new clay studio space. Come Play in Clay! Material Fee: $25, payable to the teaching artist.

Camp is held daily from 9am-3pm. Before-care is available at 8am and after-care until 5pm, offered at $5.

Think all dirt is just . . . dirt? No way! At Cool Spring you’ll discover the animals that live in all of our biomes (cool word, right!) from marsh to meadow–-even the creek. Splash! You’ll even help CraftWorks make soil when you build a composting system at our studio. Ever had a bottle of cold spring water? You’ll build a model of a spring that really works! This Earth science camp is all about having FUN doing research and creating cool projects. Learn about soils, water, and how they work together to support all life on Earth–even your life!

This camp is part of our Future Scientists of America, offered in partnership with Eastern Panhandle Conservation District. Camp hours are 9am till 3pm. Before-care available at 8am, after-care available until 5pm, at $5 per hour.

Improvisational songwriters keyboard workshop with Grammy nominee Johnny Neel. Johnny will show you hands on approach to crafting your song and adding some creative funk. This blind keyboard master will open your eyes to unique chord structure & how to find your groove.

Johnny Neel is a Grammy award nominee recognized in the music world for his work with the Allman Brothers, Lonnie Mack and Gov't Mule, among others. In addition to his soulful vocals, harp, piano and B-3 proficiency, Johnny is an accomplished songwriter whose tunes have been recorded by the likes of the Allman Brothers, Joe Louis Walker, John Mayall, Irma Thomas, Ann Peebles, Marie Osmond, the Oak Ridge Boys and Travis Tritt.

This is your week to make awesome art using nature as your medium. Want to make something cool from clay? At CraftWorks you’ll even dig clay right out of ground. Create really neat cyanotype sunpaintings with natural things. Learn the art of printmaking using sticks and stones and leaves –maybe even potatoes! Best of all! Work together to create fairy houses for all the fairies of Cool Spring! The water sprites and forest dwellers will love you!

In this one day workshop, learn how to capture the beauty of the outdoors with pencil and pen. The principals of drawing will be taught using nature as the focus. The workshop will include nature still life, drawing trees, drawing from photographs for better composition, and how to keep a nature journal. Weather permitting we will also draw outside. At the end of the week, you’ll style your own photo shoot and show off your designs in a fashion show! Take home an embellished t-shirt and a finished garment made by you!!! All writers will benefit by this 2-day workshop. For poets and aspiring playwrights especially, these workshops will deepen and broaden writing abilities. Poetry, theater and fiction use the same elements of language with different intentions and different structures. Poets will gain a new understanding of the arc or narrative; aspiring playwrights will learn how to master the language of imagery and sound. No matter what your field is, new tools can be added to your writing toolbox. These sessions reveal how we connect language to thought to say what we mean and to make people care.

Learn how to create a rich multi-layered look with silver and gold accents on a unique pin, necklace pendant or wall plaque.
We’ll pull out all the stops and use polymer clay with molds, stamps, collage and embellishments to create an incredibly ornate piece of jewelry art you will love. This is a fun and exciting two-evening class and everyone leaves with at least one special work of jewelry art they have made and the knowledge of how to do this at home. You’ll enjoy working with polymer clay, an exciting, inexpensive and versatile art form that can also be used to accent many other crafts. All skill levels welcome and encouraged.

Make special one-of-a-kind wall-hanging gifts while learning to work with polymer clay (no kiln needed). It’s fun and versatile and allows you to create all sorts of finishes and surface textures. You’ll learn to embellish your wall pockets with stamps, molds, textures, metal, paint, foils and bits of nature. Then it will be time to fill them with unique bouquets much of which you will make. You’ll gain knowledge, expertise, fun, camaraderie and two or more special gifts from this two evening class. All skill levels welcome and encouraged.
